WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central needed nearly every second of their 48-minute game against Mt. Vernon-Plankinton to secure a 13-10 victory in the opening round of the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday.
Trey Weber hauled in a 3-yard scoring strike from Trent Kingsbury with just 45 seconds remaining to cap the come-from-behind effort for the Blackhawks, who improved to 8-1.
A 56-yard touchdown run by John Witte at the 7:57 mark of the second quarter opened the scoring in the game and allowed W/WS/SC to carry a 7-0 lead into the half.
Mt. Vernon-Plankinton would go scoreless until there was just 2:41 remaining in the third quarter, when they were awarded a safety as Jesse Hastings tackled Kingsbury in the end zone.
