Brookings, Aberdeen to play for state girls’ hockey title

HURON — Top-seeded Aberdeen earned its way into the title game of the 2018 South Dakota Girls’ Varsity Hockey State Tournament with a 6-0 victory against Mitchell on Saturday at Bergman Arena.
The Lady Cougars had a goal in each of the first two periods and capped the win with four goals in the final period.
Kaitlyn Holland earned the hat trick for Aberdeen with a goal in the second period and two more in the third period. Also scoring goals for the Lady Cougars were Morgan Dean and Kensington Eckhoff.
Eckoff and Rhiannon Abel each had a pair of assists for Aberdeen, while Justin Small and Holland each had an assist.
Hailey Huff recorded the shutout in the net for the Lady Cougars, with 25 saves.
Katelyn Uithoven stopped 35 of the 41 shots she faced for Mitchell.
Aberdeen will face second-seeded Brookings for the state championship at 3:30 p.m. today at Bergman Arena. Mitchell will play Sioux Falls for third at 1 p.m.

Brookings 6, Sioux Falls 3
Bethany Rennich netted three of the six goals made by the Brookings Rangers to assist in their 6-3 win over the Sioux Falls Flyers, Saturday night at the Bergman Arena.
In the first period, Rennich scored an unassisted goal to open up the game at the 0:39 mark. But a Gabriella Schroder goal, assisted by Chloe Harbaugh evened out the score at 11:57. Elli Hegdahl came back for Brookings at the end of the first period with an unassisted shot at 12:07, to take the lead back.
Sioux Falls flew in with a goal by Alexa Christie with help from Ashley Anderson and Kaitlyn Vockler at 3:24 in the second period, before Rennich came in with an assisted goal from Jadyn Peterson.
But Grace Halvorson ended the second period with a goal assisted by Harbaugh for the Flyers.

Then Brookings took over the third period. Hegdahl put in a goal with a Montana Myer assist, followed by a Peterson goal with a Rennich assists at 5:14. Then Rennich ended the match with a goal at the 9:30 mark, assisted by Peterson and Carlie Kruse.
Ava Krabbenhoft stopped 17 of 23 shots by the Rangers, while Jadyn Runge goal tender for Brookings saved 21 shots of 24 by the Flyers.

Consolation semifinals
Watertown 8, Omaha 0
The Watertown Lakers dominated each period in a match against the Omaha Lady Jr Lancers, starting with Jaclyn Lloyd, who scored three of eight goals for the Lakers.
In the first period, Lloyd netted a goal assisted by Tessa Holien and Kaitlyn Kunkel, at the 8:30 mark, followed by a Kelsey Beebe score and another Kunkel assist.
Two Lancer shots made it in the net in the second period, both on a power play. Kendra Kranz shot the first goal with an assist from Kaitlyn Kunkel, who then scored the second goal of the period assisted by Lloyd and Beebe.
Then the Lakers tallied four goals in the third period.
Kunkel flew in with a shot in the first seconds of the period at 0:16, with assists by Lloyd and Beebe, then Lloyd scored her second goal with the help of Kunkel.
Hamann swatted in an unassisted goal at 5:08, before Lloyd took her third and final shot, making it in at 6:49 with an assist from Sophie Krueger to win the game.
Sydnie Young didn’t let a puck go by as she saved seven of seven Lancer shots, while goal tender Jennifer Baulisch saved 37 of 45 shots by the Lakers.
Rushmore Thunder will take on the Watertown Lakers at 10:30 a.m. today, to determine which team will take fifth place, while the Omaha Lady Lancers and Oahe Capitals will battle it out at 8 a.m., today for seventh.

Rushmore 4, Oahe 3
Rushmore Thunder and the Oahe Capitals extended their Saturday afternoon match into double overtime, as the teams battled it out, which ultimately led to Rushmore’s Georgianna Rowland hitting winning shot, assisted by Angeline Rasby, to end the game at a 4-3 score.
Oahe took control at the beginning of the game, with an unassisted goal at the 3:00 mark by Kaitlyn Swenson, followed by an Amy Gilkerson shot, assisted by Swenson and Jess McTighe.
But Rushmore wouldn’t let the period end without getting on the board. Caitlin King assisted Brooklyn Conti in scoring the first goal of the match from Rushmore.
Georgianna Rowland hit the puck in the net on a power play with an assist by Shila Simpson at 1:44, to mark the only goal scored in the second period, which tied the game up at 2-2.
Two unassisted goals were made in the third period, first by Rushmore’s Conti at 13:20, then by Oahe’s Gilkerson a few seconds later, to lead into overtime with a 3-3 score.
There were no goals scored in the first period of overtime, but at the 1:01 mark in double overtime, Rowland took the win for the Rushmore Thunder girls.
Madyson Herman had 26 saves for Rushmore, while Oahe’s Mariah Nelson had 27 saves.
 of which she knocked away from the net.
Rushmore Thunder will take on the Watertown Lakers at 10:30 a.m. today, to determine which team will take fifth place, while the Oahe Capitals and Omaha Lady Lancers will battle it out at 8 a.m., today for seventh place.
