Buddenhagen, Rounds earn AA honors for Tigers

HURON  — A pair of seniors, who helped Huron make a run at the Class AA state volleyball championship this season, have been named to the Class AA All-State team, which was selected by the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association.

Earning honors on the first team from the Tigers was Tenley Buddenhagen, while Libby Rounds was named to the second team.

Buddenhagen, who was named to the Class AA all-state second team a year ago, was a three-year starter at the setter position for Huron and was in her fourth year overall as a starter.

“Tenley is what most would be considered undersized with a stature of 5-foot-5, yet can make up what she lacks in size with her vertical jump and quickness,” Huron coach Shelly Buddenhagen said of her daughter. “Tenley’s speed and athleticism is a catalyst for the Tigers’ up-tempo offense which provides her undersized hitter opportunities for success against much taller front lines.”

Buddenhagen recorded 551 assists this season for the Tigers while recording 63 kills, 43 ace serves, and 216 digs.

“She has the ability to make an out-of-system pass look like an in-system pass, putting her teammates in a position to be successful,” the elder Buddenhagen added. “She is also known to have a defensive skill set.”

Despite being just 5-10, Rounds was able to wreak havoc for the Tigers on both the offensive and defensive sides of the net during her senior season.

“Libby is an undersized player on a comparable basis state-wide, yet she has proven to have the capability to run a faster, up-tempo offense and impact matches,” Buddenhagen said. “Defensively, she has changed the way other teams play with her blocking, despite playing against taller players.”

Rounds amassed 107 kills this season while inking a solo block and 28 block assists.

Rounding out the first team on the all-state list this season in Class AA were sophomore Bergen Reilly of O’Gorman, senior Brooklyn Kusler of Aberdeen Central, senior Maggie Heesch of Watertown, senior Raegen Reilly of O’Gorman, senior Sydni Schetnan of Sioux Falls Washington, and junior Brynn Kirsch of Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Second team honors also went to senior Brooklyn Grage of Brandon Valley, junior Abby Meister of Harrisburg, junior Elizabth Denevan of Sioux Falls Roosevelt, senior Hannah Keil of Aberdeen Central, sophomore Joslyn Richardson of Sioux Falls Washington, and senior Jadyn Hoftiezer of Watertown.
