HURON — Huron city commissioners met Monday evening with a full agenda to address, including a future project that could bring future revenue and jobs to the city. The commission approved a design agreement with Infrastructure Design Group out of Sioux Falls not to exceed $79,441 to put together the design for the sewer to connect the current sewer system to the Vantage Business Park.
City engineer Brett Runge stated that the project will likely be ready to bid in early 2021, with construction to begin soon after a bid is accepted. He also mentioned that while hooking to the new Northwestern station is the current design, Infrastructure Design Group would be working with city employees to review the overall designs and specifications so any new businesses moving to the business park can be added into the city’s sewer system.
Commissioners also approved a termination of contract with the COVID-19 call center and testing center, effective at the end of September. With testing now done primarily through the hospital or primary care, the need in the community for the facility has diminished, and commissioners chose to terminate the contract on the recommendation of the Beadle County COVID-19 Task Force.
The evening’s meeting began with the commission convened as the city’s board of adjustment to hear a variance request from Dale Fortin, 1409 1st Street Southwest. Fortin requested to build a shed utilizing sheet metal roofing and siding that was not within code. Commissioners discussed with City Planner Barry Cranston the upcoming Planning Commission meeting where sheet metal siding coding will be reviewed as this is a frequent variance request and is often recommended for approval.
