HURON — The Huron High School Speech & Debate Team traveled to Harrisburg on Feb. 9-10 for the Harrisburg Challenge tournament.

“We have a strong group of Interp seniors that have a very successful year,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “Again, they made the awards stage and were able to have a strong tournament.”

Top finishers from Huron:
• In Duet Interp, Green Ta Bah and Antony Sorto placed thirrd, Tessa Gogolin and Lily Halter placed sixth, and Samantha Swanson and Mylie Byrd placed seventh.

• In Humorous Interp, Cameron Cutshaw placed sixth and Tessa Gogolin placed 14th.
• In Program Oral Interp, Samantha Swanson placed seventh.

“As coaches, we are pleased with where they are at and believe they have a good chance to qualifying to the National Tournament,” Gaffer added. “We look forward to their chance next weekend.

“This was our last regular tournament of the season. Next week we go to the Northern South Dakota National Qualifying Tournament, which will also be hosted by Harrisburg,” Gaffer said.

Top finishers at this tournament qualify to attend the National Speech & Debate Tournament held this June in Des Moines, Iowa.

To help prepare for this important tournament, the team is having a public performance on Tuesday, Feb. 13, of the speeches the students have been working all year on.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in B121 (Choir Room) at the high school.

The performance is free to the public.
