HURON — The Huron Tigers took a 66-30 fall to the third top seeded Harrisburg Tigers, as the Class “AA” girls’ basketball game was dominated on Saturday night.
“Harrisburg are a very good, complete basketball team,” said Wade Stobbs, girls’ Tiger Coach. “I would say them and Stevens are two of the top teams in the state right now.”
Harrisburg, now improved to 6-1 on the season, built an early lead in the first quarter with three pointers from six-foot sophomore Aby Phipps and Kiki Berndt, who were the top players for the team at 12 points each.
Huron’s top player and Burger Plus Outstanding Player, Havyn Heinz landed in double figures at 12 points, as she answered to Harrisburg with a field goal and a free throw. Harrisburg continued to pile on the points before the end of the first quarter, with an Autumn Steffen three-point shot at 35 seconds on the clock, followed by a three pointer from Berndt with six seconds left in the period.
Heinz came back for Huron with a three-point shot in the beginning of the second quarter, followed by free throws at 5:30 on the clock from a Sydney Halling foul. Gracie Schoenfelder took Huron up to 13 points with a field goal, but Berndt came back with another three pointer at 1:20 left in the first half.
“We have to find ways to get into our offense and move a little bit,” said Stobbs. “Havyn works her tail off; we need to keep finding ways to get her the ball.”
Phipps had a foul call in the last 30 seconds of the second quarter, which gave Heinz the chance to bring Huron up in points with free throws, but the buzzer rang before the ball made the basket.
Harrisburg went into half time with a 24 point lead at a score of 37-13.
