HURON — Huron city commissioner Drew Weinreis read the details of the city’s upcoming household hazardous waste collection to end a brief commission meeting Monday evening.
The collection will be Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by the State Fair grandstands. The collection is for residential collection only, not for corporate collection.
Items that can be included are stains, varnishes, sealers, latex or oil paints, antifreeze, gasoline, car or household batteries, cleaners, solvents, waxes, and pesticides. No explosives or pressurized tanks will be allowed.
Please contact the Solid Waste Department with any questions at 353-8542.
The commission convened as the board of adjustment to review multiple requests from Doug and Cheri Bjorke and Evelyn Reints regarding a potential multi-generational home at the intersection of Center Street and Rushmore Avenue.
The commission chose to approve the variance for a multi-generational home where code only allowed for a single-family dwelling. However, the commission denied the variance to use metal siding where code prohibits metal siding for use on single-family or duplex-style dwelling structures. The applicants also requested a waiver on sidewalk installation, which was denied by the commission.
Commissioners also:
• Approved termination of seasonal employees from the street department, golf maintenance, golf pro shops, and park and recreation department.
The commission ended the meeting with a work session regarding city employee insurance options and pricing.
