HURON — There will be a Huron College/Huron University all-class reunion on July 18-20, 2024, in Huron. Organizers are hoping to draw alumni and friends of the college from all over the Midwest and beyond.

“Huron College and later, Huron University, have had a proud tradition over the years and this is an opportunity for alumni and friends to re-connect with former classmates, meet others who attended and share memories of the college,” said event coordinator Kay Hawley.

Headquarters for the reunion will be the Crossroads Hotel in Huron.

A block of rooms has been reserved there: 605-352-3204, deadline July 1; reservations@crossroadshotel.com. A second block of rooms is available at the Quality Inn: 605-352-6655, deadline June 15; SD070@stayatchoice.com.

Participants will check in at the Crossroads on Friday, July 19, and meet at the Voorhees Shelter at Central Park, near the Splash Central Water Park, the former site of the campus of Huron College/Huron University campus.

This informal gathering will include a food truck and activities and will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Those arriving early, on July 18, are invited to enjoy an informal pizza get-together at Square Deal Grocery, at 6 p.m.

Those with questions may inquire via email at: HCreunion2024@gmail.com.

Many activities are available on Saturday, July 20, including a golf outing, and an afternoon wine tasting at the Cornerpost Winery. Saturday’s events culminate with a dinner at the Crossroads Event Center. There will be a DJ on hand, and a slide presentation from years past.

Pre-registration is required and can be made via online registration at: https://bit.ly/3xfmBBW. Make sure to click on the orange button. There is a minimal cost associated with the event.

Interested alumni and friends are urged to join the group page on Facebook: Huron College Alumni. Up-to-date information is posted there.

The school was founded in 1883 as Presbyterian University of South Dakota and was originally located in Pierre. It was moved to Huron in 1897.

Financial problems related to lagging enrollment led to the college being sold to several education-related entities before closing its doors for good on April 1, 2005.

Today, the City of Huron owns and utilizes the Fine Arts Center and Campus Center.

McDougal Hall, formerly a women’s residence hall, is now the city’s Senior Center. The victory bell remains as a reminder of the athletic teams, who were known over the years as the Scalpers, Tribe, and Screaming Eagles.

Transcripts for former students are being held at Northern State in Aberdeen.
