Huron golfers seventh at Mitchell invitational

MITCHELL — A total of 16 Class AA golf teams took to the Lakeview Golf Course on Friday, to contest the Mitchell Invitational golf tournament.

The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles won a tight team race, as they shot 345 as a team to edge the hometown Mitchell Kernels by a single stroke. Rapid City Stevens was a stroke behind Mitchell, at 347, while Harrisburg and O’Gorman each shot 350 for one of the closest team finishes of the season.

The Huron Tigers shot a team total of 359, a mere 14 strokes out of the lead, but placing seventh in the stacked field.

Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa took medalist honors, shooting a 71 on the day. Tanna Phares of Stevens shot 75 for second and Huron’s Bryn Huber continued her strong play, shooting 76 to take third place in the tournament.

Riley Zebroski of Watertown and O’Gorman’s Lauren Sutcliffe each shot 77 to tie for 4th, with Zebroski prevailing in a scorecard playoff.

Kenya Bigelow finished 25th for Huron, with a 92, while Olivia Rink shot 94, good for 31st on the day. Libby Picek rounded out the Huron scorers in Mitchell, with a 97, to take 51st place.

AnneClaire Rubish shot 115 and Hannah Purintun shot 125 for the Tigers.

Huron is back in action Thursday, in a state meet course tune-up in Brookings.
