HURON — Last Friday, Feb. 26, was the deadline for prospective candidates to file for both the Huron City Commission and Huron School Board election.
As there are more candidates than there are open seats, for the first time in many years, there will be a joint, city/school district election.
According to Kelly Christopherson, Business Manager for the Huron School District, a total of three candidates filed for the two seats that will be open this election cycle.
Filing for election to the Huron School Board are incumbents Tim Van Berkum and Kristi Glanzer.
Glanzer was appointed to fill the seat vacated when David Wheeler resigned to begin his term in the S.D. State Senate.
The third candidate is Rex Sawvell, recently retired head of the school’s Building and Grounds department, and a Huron business owner.
Two seats are open on the school board, both of which are three-year terms.
Announced candidates for the single seat on the Huron City Commission include Drew Weinreis and Sarah Rogers, along with Bridget Carr.
They are vying for the seat on the commission being vacated by Doug Kludt, who did not seek re-election.
The city commission term is for four years.
The joint city/school board election will take place Tuesday, April 13.
