Lady Vikings, Warbirds claim 281 Conference team titles

HURON — The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings dethroned the defending champions to win the girl’s team title and the Wolsey-Wessington Warbird boys held on for a repeat boys’ championship at Tuesday’s 281 Conference track and field meet, held at Tiger Stadium.
The JVC girls’ team scored 190 points, to sneak past the defending champion Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds by six points. Hitchcock-Tulare was third with 91 points and Iroquois/Lake Preston was fourth with 74.5.
Rhayonna Hood of JVC was named MVP in the girls’ division.
Top perfomers in the girls’ competition included Iroquois/Lake Preston’s Adison Moore, with wins in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes - matching her accomplishment from last year - while Liz Boschee of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket took the win in both the 100 hurdles and the javelin throw.
Hitchcock-Tulare’s Emma Schneider won both the long jump and triple jump and Tatum Luce of Wolsey-Wessington doubled up on the pole vault and high jump for the Lady Warbirds, while also running the opening leg on the winning 4x100 relay team.
Daril Frandsen of JVC doubled up as well, winning the 800 and 1600 meter runs, while Highmore-Harrold’s Autumn Fallis repeated as the 3200 meter run champion.
Boys
The boys’ team race was even closer than the girls’, with the defending champion Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds edging James Valley Christian 158 to 155.5 to take the title.
Hitchcock-Tulare finished third with 111 and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket was fourth with 105.
SCW’s Jeff Boschee was named MVP for the boys on Tuesday, with a win in the high jump. Teammate Cody Slykhuis won the triple jump and both the 110 and 300-meter hurdle events, to be the only individual three-event winner on the day.
Hitchcock-Tulare’s Erik Salmen won the shot put and the javelin for the Patriots, which also got wins in both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays, as Brendan Howell, Devin Enander, Payton Chasing Hawk and Logan LaBrie got the baton around the track quickest in both events. LaBrie, a freshman, also won the 200 meter dash.
JVC’s Gavin Waldner doubled up with wins in the long jump and 100 meter dash, while Wessington Springs won the 4x400 and medley relays.
The meet’s other double winner was Caleb Richmond of Wolsey-Wessington, with wins in both the 400 and 800 meter runs.
