Large field participates in road race/walk

HURON — Cool temperatures and calm winds greeted the 189 participants who toed the starting line Saturday morning for the 36th annual Andy’s 5K/10K Road Race, Bike Ride and Harvey Gleich Memorial Fun Walk at Memorial Park in Huron.
In the 10K men’s race, Ethan Marquardt of Huron was first across the line, in a time of 41:46.53, followed by Vermillion’s William Anderson and Dan Propst of Pierre. Pan Olsen of Hendricks, Minn., took the top spot in the women’s 10K, with a time of 44:11.31. TyAnn Buddenhagen of Huron was second and Angela Anderson of Vermillion was third.
The 5K race found Pierre’s Heather DeBoer taking top honors for the women in a time of 22:35.27, followed by Huron’s Becky Wipf and Deanna Koehn. Edsson Quispe of Huron won the men’s division in a time of 20:26.57, edging fellow Huronian Tom Brantner, while Kris Levallee of Brandon was third.
In the high school cross country races, Huron swept the top three places in the boys’ division, as Frank Hines, Will Radke and Angel Granados took the top spots. Hines’ time was 19:54.07. Huron’s Sami Shoultz won the girls’ division in a time of 21:32.39, followed by Alyssa Jones of Lower Brule and Jordan Adams of Wessington.
Funds raised at this year’s race will be directed toward a fund that supports those in South Dakota who are fighting cancer with incidental expenses. Total funds raised were unavailable at press time and will be announced at a later date.
