To the Editor:
Summer recreation began a bit late this year due to the unseasonably cold weather in June. Huron’s water park, Splash Central, is scheduled to close in mid-August, allowing swimming participants a very short season.
Why is our beautiful water park not utilized at least until the end of August? I realize that many of the college-age lifeguards must leave early due to their class schedules, but there are other lifeguards who are high school students who could man the pool area for a week or two later than the currently scheduled closing date. Keeping the water park open to the public during the South Dakota State Fair would be a service to those visiting our city at that time as well as to our own citizens and to students who don’t start school until after Labor Day. Even if it would be open for only a few hours in the afternoon or evening, many individuals and groups would be able to take advantage of our water park. Plus, the lifeguards could make some extra money that they likely didn’t make at the beginning of the summer due to the weather.
Keeping Splash Central open for a few extra weeks would be a win-win situation for our city. I hope the Parks and Recreation department would consider this option.
