HURON — The Nordby Center for Recreation (NCR) announced Thursday that Joey Mitchell has been promoted to the position of Executive Director of Huron’s largest fitness facility. Mitchell has served as the Assistant Manager at the NCR since 2017, and took over as acting Executive Director when Shelly Buddenhagen retired from the position after a 22-year career in mid-April.

“We are excited to have Joey carry this facility into the future, and he brings an amazing skill set to the table and has a passion for the fitness industry, “ said Tom Glanzer, Nordby Center For Recreation Board President.  “Joey’s athletic background, facilities and program management coupled with his great leadership skills will be a perfect fit for all of the members at the Nordby; we are lucky to have him leading the charge to making Huron a healthy, fitness-minded community.”

Mitchell, grew up on a farm outside of Tulare and graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a Health and Human Services degree. He played college basketball for Black Hills State University and then transferred to DWU to finish his college basketball career and education.

“The Nordby Center’s customer base is an amazing family of ages, culture and communities, and I am excited to take over a very healthy operation and continue to strive for excellence in everything we do to help people reach their fitness goals,” said Mitchell.  “If you haven’t been to the gym in a while and you need a place to work out, we have everything there is to offer under one roof.”

Mitchell lives in Wessington Springs with his wife and daughter.
