Myers wins first feature at DSFS

Posted

HURON — A move to the WISSOTA super stock division has been a good one for Tyler Myers of Ethan. It resulted in the first feature win of his career at Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday night.
“It feels good to get my first win here. I’ve won in Wagner with a B-mod three times,” Myers said.
Myers, who has been competing for six seasons at the Huron oval, led from start to finish in the 15-lap main event.
“The car is easy to drive,” Myers said of his No. 27 super stock. “It is set up really well, so I have to thank my dad — Kip Myers — and all my sponsors for making this possible.”
Myers started on the outside of the front row and was able to grab the top spot on the opening lap, with pole sitter Jeremy North settling back in the second spot.
While Myers was able to go virtually unchallenged for the victory, North was left to fend off a pair of hard chargers in Corey Elward of Mitchell and Kelly Duffy.
Elward and Duffy were joined by Kip Myers of Ethan and Casey Hanson of Badger in the battle for the third spot. Elward would emerge with the third-place finish, followed by Myers, Hanson and defending track champion Cole Searing of Huron.
“There’s a lot of good drivers in supers. You don’t know who is going to win night to night,” Myers said.
Searing and Tyler Myers claimed wins in the super stock heat races.
Scott Borstad of Volga also made his first visit since June 28, 2014, to Victory Lane at DSFS on Saturday.
Borstad, who started on the outside of the front row, snagged the lead on the opening lap as all 17 drivers had to contend with a fresh racing surface after official had reworked it during the intermission.
“It was pretty slimy to start the race, but the track came around,” Borstad said of being able to build an early lead. “I kept messing up and they (the rest of the field) kept getting closer to me.”
Blayne Baloun of St. Lawrence, who took over the second spot from Cole Phillips of Winner on the fifth lap of the 12-lap feature, was able to catch Borstad with one lap remaining but was unable to find a way around him.
Following Baloun across the line was defending track champion Broc Stout of Winner. Ben Albertson of Cottonwood, Minn., was fourth, followed by Chris Serr of Aberdeen.
Winning the street stock heat races were Stout and Borstad.
Lorin Johnson of Miller inched closer to the 100-win mark at Dakota State Fair Speedway with a victory in the WISSOTA Midwest modified feature race on Satuday.
Johnson led from start to finish in the 15-lap main event after starting on the pole.
Tony Konold of Clear Lake held off a challenge by Tracy Johnson of Lake Preston to finish second. Johnson brought out the only caution flag in the race with a spin as he made his way through turns one and two with just two laps remaining, and retired from the race at that point.
Scott Hansen of Garden City grabbed the third spot on the restart and stayed there the remainder of the race, while Adam Brotherton of Huron was fourth and Lane Johnson of Miller was fifth.
Winning Midwest modified heat races were Lane Johnson, Hansen, Brotherton and Kyle Knouse of Huron.

Alex Guthmiller of Huron won for the third time in his career at DSFS, with a victory in the 15-lap WISSOTA modified feature race. Despite having to deal with an early caution, He was able to hold the top spot for the duration of the event.
Tyler McDonald, who started the race four spots behind Guthmiller in fifth, briefly challenged for the lead but wasn’t able to take over the top spot. Defending track champion and 2016 WISSOTA modified champion Kent Arment of Aberdeen pressured McDonald heavily for the second spot, but couldn’t make any of his attempts stick and brought home a third-place finish.
Rounding out the top five in the modified main event were Morgan Ward of Watertown and Nick Grehl of Hitchcock in spots No. 4 and 5, respectively.
Trevor Anderson of Watertown and Arment recorded wins in the modified heat races.
David McDonald of Huron topped the field in the WISSOTA late model feature race on Saturday for his 34th career win at his home track.
After starting on the outside of the second row, McDonald needed just three laps to move into second place and then made the pass for the lead just three laps later. He used the high side of the track to reach the front, while Chad Becker of Aberdeen, who led the first five laps occupied the low groove.
Becker would hold off a stiff challenge by Arment during the second half of the 20-lap race to claim the runner-up finish. Arment was third, followed by Curt Gelling of Aberdeen, who started on the inside of the fourth row, and Gary Brown Jr. of Brandon.
McDonald and Gelling were victorious in the late model heat races.
