HURON — For the first time in 15 weeks, active COVID-19 cases statewide declined from the previous week in Wednesday’s South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) report.
The state added 1,372 new positive cases, 10 new deaths, and 1,487 new recovered cases in Wednesday’s numbers.
Active cases in the state dropped from 4,433 the previous week to 4,308. That number is still as high as early March, when the state was coming down from the first major Omnicron wave of the virus.
Beadle County saw 20 new positive cases, one new death, and 47 new recovered cases reported in Wednesday’s DOH report. Active cases dipped below 100, to 95, for the first time since mid-June.
The death is the 62nd virus-related fatality in the county.
The Heartland Region noted 59 new positive cases, one new death, and 71 new recovered cases on the week. Active cases in the seven-county region dropped slightly, to 211.
Hospitalizations were notable over the week in the region, as four new hospitalizations were recorded in the Heartland over the week, bringing the month total, through two weekly reports in August, to six.
That’s already surpassed April, May, and June for month totals and is more than halfway to the second-highest total of the year, behind the 38 from January.
