PIERRE — With its top two players sidelined with injuries, Huron’s girls’ tennis team struggled to come up with wins during three matches in the Pierre Invitaitonal, which started Friday and concluded on Saturday.
St. Thomas More dealt the Tigers a 9-0 setback on Friday and Spearfish emerged with an 8-1 win in a match, which was suspended due to lightning and resumed on Saturday. Rapid City Stevens then got past Huron 9-0 on Saturday.
Madelynn Lord filled in for Audrey Rubish at No. 1 singles and doubles, while Htee Say replaced Megan Clark at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
“Our junior varsity players stepped into the top spots and played well,” Huron coach Leah Branaugh said. “I felt Madelynn Lord played her best match of the season against St. Thomas More, which the score doesn’t really reflect.”
Kayla Harvey had the lone win for the Tigers with a 10-4 victory at No. 3 singles against Sierra Hauff of Spearfish.
“The match was suspencded due to lightning and finished the next day,” Branaugh said. “I thought she did a great job of coming out ready to play and finishing the match to secure the win for us today.”
Huron will close the regular season at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet at 8 a.m. Thursday in Aberdeen.
