HURON — The Huron Tigers hosted several Class “AA” track and field teams Thursday, as the Mark Wendelgass Invitational - named for the longtime Huron High School educator, coach and administrator - at Tiger Stadium.
For many athletes it was a final chance to make a qualifying time or distance for the Class “AA” State track and field meet, set for Sioux Falls on May 24-25.
Huron pole vaulter Matt Katz had a career day, threatening the meet record of 15-feet, 4-inches in the event and winning with a height of 15-1. For his efforts, Katz earned the Dan Thelen Pole Vault Award at the event in honor of the late HHS pole vault coach.
Huron’s 4x200-meter relay team also won its race for the Tiger boys.
