SIOUX FALLS — The Huron boys’ tennis team is 17th after the opening day of the State Tennis Meet on Thursday.
Remaining alive in the tournament for the Tigers are five singles players and two doubles teams.
Henry Rubish at No. 2, Tyler Sterrett at No. 3 and Brenden Schlader at No. 5 all opened the tournament with singles wins for Huron, while Landon Claeys at No. 4 received a bye as the sixth seed.
All four suffered setbacks in their second round matches and were bumped into the consolation round, where they all rebounded with wins to reach the consolation quarterfinals.
Huron’s No. 6 player, Reese Uecker, suffered a loss in his first match but won his second match to secure a spot in the consolation quarterfinals.

The lone singles player for the Tigers to have his tournament ended on the opening day was Blake Meyer at No. 1. He was defeated with set scores of 7-5 and 6-2 by Chase Thurness of St. Thomas More in the opening round and then handed a 10-4 setback by Isaiah Vilhauer of Aberdeen Roncalli in the second round.
Meyer will still be in competition today, however, as he teamed with Sterrett to go 2-1 in No. 1 doubles during the opening day.
Meyer and Sterrett used a 10-3 win in a tiebreaker to defeat Yankton in the opening round. The duo then faced top-seeded Sioux Falls Lincoln in the second round and were handed 6-0 and 6-2 losses.
Meyer and Sterrett rebounded with a 10-6 win against Harrisburg in the consolation round to stay alive in the tournament.
Rubish and Claeys opened with back-to-back 6-1 wins against Vermillion in the opening round at No. 2 doubles, but were handed a setback in the second round by Brandon Valley.
The Huron duo then received a bye in the consolation second round and will face Brookings in the consolation quarterfinals today.
Huron’s No. 3 doubles team of Schlader and Uecker won their opening match against Vermillion 6-1 and 6-0, but lost 6-3 and 6-3 to Sioux Falls Washington in the second round. They were eliminated from the tournament with a 10-7 setback against Aberdeen Central.
The second day of the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. today.
