PIERRE — Huron senior Nolan Wiegel climbed into a tie for the 12th spot during the second day of the Class AA State Boys’ Golf Tournament on Tuesday at Hillsview Golf Course.
After shooting a 76 through the first 18 holes of play on Monday, Wiegel carded an even-par 72 during the final 18 holes on Tuesday to secure all-state honors for the Tigers. He finished with a two-day total of 148.
“ I was really happy to see him go out on a good note playing in his last varsity meet,” Huron coach Chris Rozell said of Wiegel. “He capped a great six-year varsity career, which arguably may be one of the best in Huron High School history.”
Austin Hoss of Pierre capitalized on his home course by rallying during the final 18 holes of play to win the Class AA individual title. After starting the day two strokes behind the leader, a round of 68 on Tuesday put him at 137, which was good enough for a one-stroke margin of victory.
Jack Lundin of Sioux Falls Roosevelt was second at 138, while Jonah Dohrer of Aberdeen Central, who was the first-round leader, tied for third with Jonah Swartz of Rapid City Stevens at 143.
Bryce hammer of Sioiux Falls O’Gorman was fifth at 144, followed by Michael Frick of Yankton.
Mason Rozell finished tied for 58th for Huron with a 166. He turned in an 84 Tuesday after shooting an 82 on Monday.
