BRANDON — More familiar surroundings helped the Huron boys’ golf team shave 21 strokes from its score during the second day of the Metro Invite on Tuesday.
After shooting a combined score of 348 on Monday at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls, the Tigers carded a 327 during the final 18 holes on Tuesday, which was played at Brandon Golf Course.
“The first day was kind of a shock for us on a challenging course that we hadn’t seen before,” Huron coach Chris Rozell said. “The familarity of the course helped us today and we were more comfortable.”
The improvement during the final round moved Huron up one spot to 12th in the final standings with a two-day total of 675.
“Overall, it was a good outing and a good experience for us,” Rozell said.
Senior Nolan Wiegel led the Tigers with a total of 147, which placed him in a three-way tie for fourth in the individual standings. After shooting a 75 on Monday, he inked a 72 on Tuesday, which included a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine.

“All the top teams and top players in the state were in this tournament and he was right in there. He battled well today,” Rozell said of his top golfer. “It bodes well for the rest of the season and should give him some confidence that he can compete with the top players in the state.”
Jonah Dohrer of Aberdeen Central used a 75 on Tuesday to finish at 145 and claim the medalist honors. Will Grevlos of Sioux Falls Washington and Jack Lundin of Sioux Falls Roosevelt shared the second spot with scores of 146, while Wiegel, Nathan Woodall of Sioux Falls Washington and Bryce Hammer of Sioux Falls O’Gorman all finished at 147.
Huron’s second and third golfers combined for a 22 stroke improvement from the opening round. Mason Rozell tallied an 82 on Tuesday after a 93 on Monday to finish at 175, while Jacob Wehde had an 83 on Tuesday after shooting a 94 on Monday for a 177 total. They finished tied for spots No. 53 and 59,  respectively.
“Mason battled back and Jacob Wehde had a good day as well today,” Rozell said.
Eighth-grader Landon Roberts shot a 90 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 183, which placed him in a four-way tie for 65th for the Tigers. Teammate Nathan Gauer also finished at 183 after shooting an 87 during the first 18 holes.
Rounding out the lineup for Huron was freshman Will Smith, who shaved nine strokes off his opening round score with a101 on Tuesday to finish at 211.
“Eighth-grader Landon Roberts had a good round and gained some good experience, as did Will Smith,” Rozell said. “Those two are only going to get better.”
Sioux Falls Washington finished with a team total of 604 for the two-day event to edge Sioux Falls O’Gorman, which led after the opening round, by two strokes. Sioux Falls Lincoln was third at 616, followed by Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 621 and Aberdeen Central at 629.
The Huron golfers will be back in action Thursday, when they travel to face Mitchell in a dual.
