WOLSEY — The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds took a sizeable step toward a return trip to the Class 9AA championship game, as they posted a 78-28, mercy-rule shortened win over the Irene-Wakonda Eagles in a quarterfinal game Thursday night.
And the teams only played for one half, as the Warbirds cruised to a 44-14 lead after one quarter.
The Eagles had no answer for the potent Warbird rushing attack, as Lynden Williams scored five touchdowns on the night, as the senior running back carried the ball 11 times for a whopping 328 yards and five touchdowns, scoring on runs of 38, 56, 19, 60 and 37 yards in the game. His running mate in the Warbird backfield, DeVante Luelleman ran 10 times for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Diedrich Offt scored twice as well. Wolsey-Wessington pushed its record to 10-0 on the season.
