HURON — Sallianne Hines of Huron has recently released her first published novel, “Her Summer at Pemberley,” a Jane Austen sequel that is on bookshelves now.
“Her Summer at Pemberley” shares the story of Catherine “Kitty” Bennet, one of four sisters introduced in Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, “Pride and Prejudice.” The other sisters are Jane, Mary, and Lydia.
“Kitty always struck me as the sister most ‘stuck’ in the Bennet family,” Hines said. “Jane and Lizzy had each other. Kitty’s only choice was Mary, or to tag along in Lydia’s shadow. I knew Kitty had a story of her own to tell and I resolved to write it. Kitty’s story is my second novel written, first published."
"Like me, Kitty is a horsewoman,” Hine said. “Women’s riding was very restricted during those years, as were women’s social roles. Kitty is determined to break out of those constraints and finds a mentor in Lady Drake. Horses play an important part in Kitty’s life-changing summer at Pemberley.”
Hines said she was in her 40s before she discovered Jane Austen’s novels, and read everything she could by the author.
Hines has a second novel, a contemporary women's fiction called “Love & Stones” that will launch in mid-June, with two other books planned for this year.
Due to COVID-19, book signing and reading at the library have been postponed, but she does have several author copies of the book to sign and sell.
Hines is a lifelong horsewoman, and has three children and eight grandchildren. She lives in Huron with a bossy cat and two dogs.
