To the Editor:

In the Sept. 1 Plainsman, Ron Schmidt states there are some things he doesn’t understand. I have some things that I too do not understand.

How can you lose something you never had? We never had a democracy, so how can you lose it? We are a republic, there is a big difference.

In grade schools, on radio and TV stations, at city, county, school and state meetings, things start with the Pledge of Allegiance, which states, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Doesn’t get much clearer than that.

In a democracy, the mob can rule because there is no constitution. A democracy will take away your freedom. A democracy will destroy our constitution. We are a nation of law, not of men. We’re all supposed to be equal under the law.

Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, said “Republics decline into democracies and democracies degenerate into despotisms,” which means the exercise of absolute power in a cruel and oppressive way.

I don’t understand why anyone would want their offspring to grow up in a socialist country, which is one step away from communism.

I would like to ask some our elected officials, some of our news media and some of our editorial writers if they are members of the United States communist party or just a left-winged socialist?

I am not ashamed and am proud to say I am a patriotic American, who honors our republic’s constitution.
