Happy 153th birthday, Half-Pint! Laura Ingalls was born Feb. 7, 1867, seven miles north of the village of Pepin, Wis.
By the time she married Almanzo Wilder in De Smet 18 years later, she and her family had trekked more than 2,000 miles across the frontier lands of the Midwest. They traveled by foot, by wagon, by horse and by train through Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota.
The Ingalls family’s journey became beloved books when Wilder sat down, at age 63, to tell her story. What started as a simple autobiography intended for adults instead became the “Little House on the Prairie” series, which has now sold more than 41 million copies in the U.S. and has been translated into more than 40 languages.
The Huron Public Library will celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder birthday, Feb. 3 – 7, with children’s activities which include making a friendship bracelet and building a log house out of Lincoln Logs.
The children’s department is also celebrating Valentine’s Day with a week-long celebration! The week will include cookie decorating, hide and seek Hershey Kisses, card making, and more! Elementary Explorers will meet Feb. 6th and 27th at 4:00 p.m. to experiment with making snowflakes and the invention of popsicles.
• On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Fourth- through 12th grades joined forces with YNot Make a Difference by filling hearts with candies to deliver to care facilities.
• Saturday, Feb. 6, 11 a.m. to noon, Manga readers are encouraged to join the Manga Book Club at the library. They will eat noodles, watch anime and discuss manga books. After manga book club is Pizza & Play — teens and tweens will make their own pizza and play board games.
