HARTFORD — Luella Shafer, 82, of Hartford, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
A service celebrating Luella’s life will be 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. A remembrance ceremony will follow the service at 2:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Cemetery at Aberdeen.
Luella was born on February 2, 1935, in Hosmer to George and Emilia Wiederich. She began working for St. Luke’s as a certified nursing assistant when she was a teenager. She was united in marriage to Harold Shafer September 4, 1953. The couple moved to their farm in Long Lake to raise their four children.
She worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Redfield Assisted Living. She was a member of the ALCW, Square Dance Camping Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by husband, Harold; children, Harley (Tammy) Shafer of Sioux Falls, Harvey Shafer of Crooks, Joy (Vincent) Powers of Hartford, and Donna Davey of Newcastle, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Leo and Elmer Wiederich, and Claudia Hasting; and great-grandchild Paxton Shafer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Avera Dialysis in Sioux Falls.
