Her Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Welter Funeral Home with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Huron.

Marlis Costello was born Marlis Kay Marshall on Dec. 5, 1952, to Lyle and Theone (Tollefson) Marshall at St John’s Hospital in Huron. She grew up on a farm near Bonilla and graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1970. Marlis attended nurses training in Sioux City, Iowa, and graduated with highest honors in 1973. She was employed at St John’s Hospital, then became Director of Nursing at the Huron Nursing Home until she moved to Minnesota and worked in the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria for over 30 years.

On July 6, 1973 she married Bill Costello. Together they enjoyed raising their two sons, Adam and Justin. They formed many friendships wherever they lived.

She enjoyed her life near water in Minnesota and in Florida during the winter. Marlis liked reading, floating on her pontoon, fishing, gaming — especially Baldur’s Gate, watching her favorite TV shows, gardening, camping, quilting, cooking, and mostly visiting with friends and family.

She is survived by two sons: Adam (Bethaney) Costello of Fridley, Minn., and Justin (Amanda) Costello of Camas, Wash.; one precious granddaughter, Nora Jane Costello; her special friend, Grant Torfin; one sister, Sandy (Roger) Kissner; one brother, Jack (Midge) Marshall; one sister-in-law, Cindy (Bill) Rittburger; one brother-in-law, Jay (Tracy) Costello; one uncle, Jack (Joyce) Harris; one aunt, Jeaniene (Donald) Woodford; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Marlis was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 2012; her parents; two brothers: Ken and Larry; one niece, Sherri; her grandparents; many aunts and uncles, and cousins.
