NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees) Pheasant Chapter 0899 met Wednesday at the Huron Area Senior Center with 12 members present. The closest Alzheimer’s memory care unit in Woonsocket has been closed and residents have been moved to Mitchell. Reminder letters are being mailed to members with upcoming renewal dates. Both national and chapter dues need to be paid in order to remain in good standing in the local chapter. Members were thanked for participating in Meals on Wheels recently, as well as many other volunteer contributions. New webinars are constantly being produced and are available free to members on the NARFE website. New Medicare cards are being mailed beginning in April and throughout the next year. Various negative efforts requesting information and money are scams and should be avoided. The Senior Living Fair will be held on May 16 at Huron Community Campus. Both dementia and Parkinson’s support groups are available in the Huron area. The S.D. Federation Convention will take place May 15-17 at Royal River Casino & Hotel in Flandreau.
Guest speaker was S.D. NARFE Federation President John Bultsma of Sioux Falls. He spoke on membership trends, staying informed on topics related to members, supporting lawmakers who vote in favor of the federal and postal communities, current lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill, and becoming involved in local chapter leadership.
NARFE is open to all active and retired federal and postal employees. Along with looking out for earned pay and benefits of members, NARFE also supports education and research on Alzheimer’s disease.
