SIOUX FALLS – Elite runner Simeon Birnbaum completed his exceptional running career with a record-setting time in the 1,600 meter as part of the final day of the Class “AA” state track meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
Birnbaum completed his laps in 4:02.78, breaking the record of Huron's Rod DeHaven, whose 4:09.8 time held as the best at the state meet was one of the oldest state meet records still on the books, set at the 1984 meet.
Despite his efforts, Birnbaum’s Rapid City Stevens club finished third in a top-heavy team points race. O’Gorman took the team title in boys’ AA with 100.5 points, followed by Brandon Valley at 90.5, and Stevens at 88 points.
Huron finished with five team points.
On the girls’ side, Sioux Falls Lincoln pulled away in the final day to secure the team title with 114 points. Brandon Valley finished second with 102 points, followed by O’Gorman at 91 and Rapid City Stevens with 81 points.
The Huron girls’ team accumulated one point during the meet.
