HRMC launches information technology apprenticeship

Posted

HURON — Erick Larson, President and CEO for Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) and Brooke Sydow, HRMC Program Manager, attended the Start Today SD Registered Apprenticeship Program signing ceremony in Pierre to officially kick off HRMC’s Healthcare Information Technology (IT) apprenticeship program.

HRMC was one of 12 new registered apprenticeship programs selected and officially approved by the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship at the Start Today SD signing event in Pierre last week.

The Healthcare IT apprenticeship is designed to teach the major disciplines of IT that specifically pertain to a hospital. Apprentices will complete four cycles of paid, on-the-job training within the information systems department, working alongside current experienced employees.  Apprentices will rotate after approximately three months for each area. Participants will spend time learning desktop support including training on computer competency and troubleshooting computer problems, network support including learning HRMC network protocols, maintenance and operation of electronic health records, as well as learning the aspects of reporting, analyzing data and identifying trends.

HRMC has added the healthcare information technology to their line of apprenticeships thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) for the development of new registered apprenticeship programs.

HRMC has established registered apprenticeship programs in nursing, surgical technologist, youth certified nursing assistant, and respiratory therapy. If you are interested in entering an HRMC apprenticeship, contact Brooke Sydow at 605-461-8364 or bsydow@huronregional.org.
