Sioux Falls teams win titles at Clyde Cotton Invitational

HURON — The Sioux Falls Lincoln boys and the Sioux Falls Christian girls claimed titles during the Clyde Cotton Huron Invitational on Saturday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

With five runners inside the top 25, the Patriots finished with 73 points to claim the boys’ title. Rapid City Central was second at 90, while Brandon Valley had 123 to edge Sioux Falls Jefferson by a point for the third spot.

Sioux Falls Washington rounded out the top five in the varsity boys’ standings with a 173.

Huron was 14th at 379.

Jared Lutmer of Pierre won the medalist honors with a time of 16:23.22, while Gage Grohs of Custer was second at 16:34.92.

Rounding out the top five were Jack Castelli of O’Gorman at 16:42.04, Eli Johnson of a Sioux Falls Jefferson at 16:46.57 and Mikah Peterson of Brandon Valley at 16:49.69.

Sophomore TJ Lien led the Tigers with a time of 17:41.80 to finish 17:41.80.

Dax Frandsen was the top James Valley Christian runner with an 18:33.33 to finish 54th.

Sioux Falls Christian had five runners in the top 20 to claim the varsity girls’ title with 50.

Spearfish was second at 63, followed by Brandon Valley at 81, Chamberlain at 122 and O’Gorman at 130.

Huron was 12th in the final standings at 282.

Ali Bainbridge of Sioux Falls Lincoln crossed the finish line in 17:45.38 to win the varsity girls’ race, while Libby Castelli of O’Gorman was second at 18:06.00. Addison Scholten of Brandon Valley was third at 18:31.60, followed by Ruth Pardy of O’Gorman at 18:40.66 and Peyton VanDeest of Speafish at 18:44.67.

James Valley Christian’s Abby Hasart was 36th at 21:07.79

Josie Vlieger led Huron with a 22:04.84 to finish 59th. Lily Meyer and Victoriah Buffington finished in spots No. 63 and 65, respectively, for the Tigers with times of 22:11.42 and 22:13.13.

“No one placed for the Huron Tigers, but a few of them ran a personal records,” Huron coach Angie Thomas said. “Lily Meyer was one of those runners.  She ran a really good varsity race and placed just behind Josie Vlieger to be the second Huron Tiger to finish.”

Huron will return to action Thursday at the Russ Strande Invitational in Brookings.

“It’s a faster course than ours, so I’m expecting some faster times from my runners,” Thomas said. “During practice next week, we will be re-visiting the goals that the athletes wrote at the beginning of the season to see if they are on-track to achieve them.”
