HURON — After opening with a convincing 8-1 victory against Aberdeen Roncalli, the Huron girls’ tennis team came away with a split during a season-opening triangular with a 7-2 setback against defending Class A champion Mitchell at Huron Courts.
“All the girls played well,” Huron coach Rachel Kary said. “It was a great start to the season.”
Two of the wins for the Tigers against Aberdeen Roncalli came via forfeit. AnneClaire Rubish was awarded the win at No. 1 singles for Huron due to the Cavaliers missing their top singles player and then combined with Lizzy Heinen to claim the win by forfeit at No. 1 doubles.
The Tigers would finish with a sweep in the singles competition.
Heinen inked a 10-4 win at No. 2, while Bianca Medina cruised to a 10-1 win at No. 3.
Beth Engelhart rallied to force a tiebreaker at No. 4 and emerged with a 7-4 win to take the match 10-9.
Say May at No. 5 and Ann Hoek at No. 6 won 10-1 and 10-2, respectively, against Roncalli.
Katherine Kretchman and River Haskel claimed the lone win in the match for the Cavaliers in No. 2 doubles. They escaped with a 7-5 win in a tiebreaker against Huron’s Medina and Engelhart to secure a 10-9 win in the match.

Ma had the lone singles win for Huron against Mitchell, with a 10-5 victory at No. 5.
