Curtis Lavern Weber was born to Wilhelm and Emma Rosa (Wahl) Weber, on January 7, 1926, at Wessington Springs. He was the eldest and only son; three sisters followed him.
He was born into a strong German with Russian heritage, and when he started school, he only spoke German. His memories of childhood included harsh winters when all four of the kids slept in the same bed, no electricity, but always enough to eat. He grew up on the farm where they butchered their meat and grew their own produce. His love of gardening continued on in his life. He had fun counting the number of cherry tomatoes he had grown in the garden bunks while at Avantara. His love of food included German Kuchen, Knefla and one cannot forget his love of dessert.
After attending country school up to the eighth grade, he went to Brookings, S.D., to Agricultural School for four years. He took a few elective courses such as livestock, crop judging, and others that would contribute to his success of running the family farm.
In 1946, he married Carol Mead and they had five boys. It was a busy household with all helping run the farm. Curt did custom combining, windrowing and baling, as well as running a dairy farm. Curt also worked for Tri-State Insulation and Siding for a number of years. He was always a hard worker.
On August 13, 1982, Curt married Ruth Brock Decker, with her, he added to the joy of his life with eight step-children. Curt was the Greenskeeper at the Springs Country Club in Wessington Springs, S.D., for a number of years. After retirement, he and Ruth enjoyed some traveling. When they moved to Huron, S.D., he took an active part in the community gardens and the senior center. He loved playing cards, cribbage, and the challenge of jigsaw puzzles.
Family members who preceded him in death were his parents; sons, Gaylon and Wayne; and sisters, Esther Winegarden and Helen Baum.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 39 years; sons, Darwin (Lola), Longview, Wash., C.L. (Sherry), Custer, S.D., and Gaylord (Deena), Liberty, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Carol (Wayne, deceased) Weber, Portland, Ore.; sister, Dorothy Slyder; grandchildren; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
Also adding joy to his life were Ruth’s children, Dennis (Maureen) Decker, David Decker, Jolene (Bruce) Harms, Melanie (Mark) Wipf, Donavon (Kirsten) Decker, June (David) Burney; son-in-law, David Clark; and many step-grandchildren. Ruthie’s children that preceded Curt in death were daughters, Monica German and Mary Clark.
Curt’s family wants to thank Dr. Robert Hohm and the many workers at Avantara who helped care for Curt the last 2-1/2 years.
