HURON — David L. Rand, 81, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at his home in Huron.
A Memorial Service to celebrate David’s life will be 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, at Welter Funeral Home with honors provided by the Huron Police Department. Visitation with the family present, will begin at 5 p.m. until the time of service.
David Lee Rand was born November 5, 1936, in Wolsey to Lloyd and Ruth (Gogolin) Rand. He attended school in Wolsey and graduated in 1954. David joined the Army National Guard in 1954, and was honorably discharged in 1957.
David married Mary Ann Minium on June 2, 1957, in Wolsey. To this union, two children were born, Brian and Lisa.
David worked as a farm hand from 1957 to 1959, and then as a gas station attendant before joining the Huron Police Department on April 16, 1960. David retired on June 15, 1989, from the police department as a Detective Captain. During his time with the police department, he was also a state firearms instructor for many years.
David enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time as well as taxidermy for many years. He was a member of the South Dakota Peace Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and the NRA.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children, Brian (Karen) Rand of Lake Byron, and Lisa DiRose of Watertown; grandchildren, Cory Rand, Desiree (Dustin Grovenberg) Rand, Justin (Ruth) DiRose, and Matthew (Courtney) DiRose; five great-grandchildren, Waylon, William, Preslee, Zander, June, Evan, and Ailynn; his brother, Larry (Dorothy) Rand of Punta Gorda, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; and his brother, Ken Rand.
