PIERRE — Don Rounds, 90, of Pierre, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Avera Maryhouse.
Don’s funeral will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 28, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 27, at the church from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed by a Wake Service.
Don was born on August 1, 1927, in Iroquois to Marion and Mary (Engebos) Rounds. His mother died in 1930, leaving ten children. Don considered himself extremely blessed to have been taken in and raised by the Kauth family on a farm near Cavour.
Don married Joyce Reinartz in May, 1953, the same month they both graduated from Huron College. He taught high school and coached in Kennebec, Cavour, Yale and Hitchcock before moving to Pierre to become the State Highway Safety Director. He later went to work for the S.D. Rural Electric Association and in 1975, became Executive Director of the South Dakota Petroleum Council. He retired in 1994.
Don and Joyce were the parents of eleven children – ten sons and one daughter. All 11 of their offspring received at least one college degree from a S.D. University with four of them obtaining advanced degrees.
In 1987, Joyce died from breast cancer. Don later married Rosemary Heer Scarborough, whose husband, Marlin, had passed away shortly after Joyce. Rosemary had three children who Don welcomed and loved as his own.
Don is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Mike (Jean), Michele (Randy) Brich, Dennis, Douglas (Jackie), Timothy (Kristin), Daniel (Wendey), Thomas (Shelly), Patrick (Michelle), Steven (DeeAnn), Scott (Kara) and Jamison (Cathy); stepchildren, Michelle (Rob) Julian, Marc (Pam) Scarborough and Ryan (Patricia) Scarborough; sister, Marge Blue; brother, Jim (Janice) Rounds; brothers-in-law, Dennis Reinartz, Myron (Darlene) Reinartz and David (Ruth) Heer; 36 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; infant grandson Jesse Rounds; infant great-grandson Christopher Stoeser; his parents, Marion and Mary Rounds, John Kauth and Georgiana Kauth; and siblings, Al, Gordon, Wesley, Ella Mae Drake, Marion, Dale and Bob.
Don’s family consider themselves blessed in so many ways to have had him as their husband, father, stepfather, grandpa, mentor and great friend.
