WOONSOCKET — Evelyn P. Hjelm, 93, of Woonsocket, passed away Thursday morning April 27, 2017, at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday May 1, at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket. Burial will be in St. Wilfrid Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. A scripture service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Evelyn “Evie” Philoma Jarding was born near Alexandria November 9, 1923, near Alexandria to Lawrence and Anna Jarding. In 1942, she graduated from Alexandria High School.
She was united in marriage to Harold Sandness in 1946. Harold passed away in 1950, leaving Evie a widow at age of 27. On January 8, 1955, she was united in marriage to Duane “Chuck” Hjelm and the blended family lived on the former Stegeberg farm the former home of Eleanor McGovern. In August of 2016, she moved to Prairie View Healthcare.
For 35 years she was a leader of the TL Rangers 4-H Club, was an active in the “If You Go, I’ll Go” extension club. She was an active member of St. Wilfrid Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and the American Legion Auxiliary. In 2008, she was named Queen of the TOPS organization. She enjoyed many Farmers Union bus tours.
