HURON — Mariel A. Gulbraa, age 90, of Huron, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2020 at Avantara Huron.

Her private funeral service will be on Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial following in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Mariel Gulbraa was born July 12, 1930, to Maurice and Alice (McAndrew) Edwards in Watertown. She lived with her parents on a farm south of Watertown and attended country school before moving at age 12 to a farm north of Bradley that her parents had purchased. She graduated from Bradley High School, and then earned a teaching certificate from Northern State College. She taught for 12 years, starting at a country school near Bradley, and then in Wallace, Bancroft, Wessington Springs, and finally a country school east of Huron.

She married Carl Gulbraa on May 23, 1959. The couple made their home in Huron and had two children, Shari and Rance. Mariel and Carl were active members of American Lutheran Church in Huron. Mariel taught Sunday school and she and Carl often served as ushers on Sunday mornings.
Carl and Mariel also spent many summers fishing all around the area. She also enjoyed riding horses, and animals in general. The couple also traveled extensively and enjoyed going on cruises.
Mariel enjoyed crafts, and would paint and decorate many of Carl’s workshop creations. She was proud of her flower displays around her home each summer. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, always trying out new recipes. Her favorite recipes were published once in the Plainsman. She won many blue ribbons at the State Fair for baking and crafts. Her biggest frustration in the kitchen was donuts, which she felt she could never get right.

Mariel is survived by her husband of 61 years, Carl;  her daughter, Shari (Jeff) Duffy, and her son Rance Gulbraa, both of Huron; one grandson, Jarren (Katelyn) Duffy of Vermillion; two sisters, Jeanette Tarbox of Huron, and Delores (Lyle) Boetel of Cavour; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, John and Anna Gulbraa, six brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
