CAVOUR — Mary A. Meyers, 86, of Cavour, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron surrounded by her loving family.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 20, at American Lutheran Church in Huron with interment following in Restlawn Memory Gardens. Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday followed by a prayer service and time of sharing at 7 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Mary was born on the family farm in rural Iroquois December 4, 1931, to Fred and Myrtle (Bond) Knouse. She attended country school near the farm and later moved to Nebraska to attend high school where she lived with her sister. After her high school education, she moved back to South Dakota and lived in Huron where she worked as a waitress.
Mary was united in marriage to Earnest W. Meyers January 20, 1952, in Huron where they lived and worked until moving to Cavour when they purchased Meyers Café. After 17 years of taking care of her customers, they sold the restaurant and bar in 1981. Over the years, Mary touched many with her practical advice and compassionate ways, scolded when needed, and was that one person that was confided in fully. Her heart had room for all and she was wise in ways that always seemed to help. Mary enjoyed spending time bird watching, working in the yard, and tending to her garden and flowers. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was known to make them the best hot chocolate. Cooking, baking, reading, knitting, and crocheting were other hobbies she enjoyed.
Mary is survived by one son, Terry Meyers of Cavour; one daughter, Debra Smith of Cavour; seven grandchildren, Emily Dicke, Jennifer Gaddy, Delayna Asapau, Aleck Smith, Kimberly Meyers, Deedra Smith, Abrahm Smith, Adrian Smith; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane DeLong of Huron, two brothers-in-law, Harold Owens and Lyle (Donna) Meyers, both of Huron; one sister-in law, Marilyn Dollenbacher of Brookings.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son in infancy, Robert Meyers; her husband, Earnest on February 6, 1982; five brothers, Frank, Melvin, Marvin, Clarence, and Donald Knouse; and two sisters, Fern Whitlow and Dorthy Koepke.
Memorials may be directed to VFW Auxiliary, Salvation Army, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice.
