Top seeds win openers in Girls' 14U state tourney

Sioux Center 7, Rushmore 5
The Sioux Center Storm 14U girls’ hockey team used a five-goal second period Friday to secure a 7-5 win over the Rushmore Thunder and punch their ticket to the championship round of the state tournament at Bergman Arena.

Kirsten Curiel got the Storm on the board with a goal to open the match, but Rushmore fired back with goals from Aurora Valladolid and Victoria Eggers to take a 2-1 lead. A goal seconds later, Sioux Center got the evener as Riya Brenner hit the back of the net for a 2-2 tie after one period.

The Storm forged into the lead, which they wouldn’t give up, in the opening two minutes of the second period as Addison Svobody and Brooklyn Byl scored goals. Eggers scored a moment later for Rushmore, but Byl answered a minute and a half later for Sioux Center.

Anna Larson cut the margin to one goal, 5-4, with a power play goal for Rushmore, but the Storm got goals from Maci Cannegieter and Riya Brenner to forge a 7-4 lead headed to the final period.

Eggers scored the only goal of the third period, collecting the hat trick, but the Storm skated out the clock and collected the win.

Lexi Ringleberg picked up the win in net for Sioux Center, stopping 14 of the 19 shots she faced. The Storm made it much tougher on Rushmore goalie Bristol Simmons, as they fired 49 shots on goal.

Sioux Falls 9, Mitchell 1
In the final game of the opening round, the top seeded Sioux Falls Flyers raced to a 9-1 win over the Mitchell Marlins.

Sioux Falls scored four in the first, three in the second and two in the third period to take the win and move to the championship round where they will face Sioux Center tonight at 7 p.m.

Callie Pederson got the Flyers off the ground with a goal two minutes into the game and Aniston Murray made it 2-0, two minutes later. Goals by Juliana Chan and Pederson staked the Flyers to a 4-0 lead.

Mitchell got a goal from Livaya Mimmack to open the second period, but Ella Stavenger, Lily Gorra and Murray all lit the lamp for Sioux Falls in the third period, then Mackenzie Pederson and Alyssa Ver Hoeven closed out the 9-1 win.

Lauren Hanson picked up the win for Sioux Falls, making two saves on three shots on goal, while Kynslee Tronnes faced 40 shots in goal for Mitchell, making 31 saves.

The Marlins will face Rushmore in the consolation round, at 3 p.m.

HURON — With six unanswered goals during the first and second periods, second-seeded Oahe cruised to a 9-2 victory against Huron in the opening round of the Girls’ 14U State Hockey Tournament on Friday at Bergman Arena.

The Capitals scored goals just 20 seconds apart in the opening period to stake a 2-0 lead. Dakota Mcentaffer opened the scoring with a goal on a pass from Aubrey Stewart and Reagan Emme found the net on an unassisted shot.

Huron managed to get on the board three minutes later, as Taylor Sorben scored on a pass from Bayla Miner to make it 2-1.

Oahe kept the pressure on and managed two more goals before the end of the opening period. Ava Lavinger scored on a pass from Elliot Bertsch and Emme inked her second goal of the game during a power play with Mallory Lehrkamp and Sonya Jundt earning assists.

The Capitals then scored four unanswered goals in the second period to break the game open.

Lavinger would have a pair of goals to earn the hat trick, while Emme also scored her third of the game to secure the hat trick.

Also scoring in the second period was Lehrkamp, who had an assist on Lavinger’s third goal of the game.

Elizabeth Sorben found the net to open the scoring in the third period for Huron. She scored on a pass from Taylor Sorben to slice Oahe’s lead to 8-2.

The Capitals would cap the scoring, however, as Lehrkamp hit the net on an unassisted shot for her second goal of the game.

Oahe finished with 32 shots on goal, compared to 17 for the All-Stars.

Taylah Allerdings recorded 15 saves in the net for the Capitals. Avelia Colon had 23 saves for Huron.

Both teams return to action today. Oahe will face Watertown in the semifinals at 5 p.m., while Huron plays Brookings in the consolation semifinals at 1 p.m.

Watertown 4, Brookings 3
HURON — Third-seeded Watertown needed three goals in the final period to survive an upset bid by sixth-seeded Brookings in the opening round of the Girls’ 14U State Hockey Tournament on Friday at Bergman Arena.

The Lakers escaped with a 4-3 victory to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Both teams found the net once in the opening period.

Watertown took the lead with an unassisted goal by Lily Murray. However, the Rangers would answer with a goal by Ashton Otteson on an unassisted shot to make it 1-1.

The score stayed deadlocked through the second period, as neither team was able to add to its total.

Brookings to its first lead of the game with the opening goal of the third period. Otteson collected her second goal of the game less than a minute into the period on an unassisted shot.

Back-to-back goals snagged the lead back for the Lakers at 3-2. Emma Schleusner had the first on an unassisted shot, while Gracelyn Webb had the second on a pass from Amerie Serie.

The Rangers would pull even as Otteson earned the hat trick with her third goal of the game. Khloe Ziegeldorf was credited with the assist.

The 3-3 tie would not last long, however, as Mikenna Knopf would score the eventual game winner for Watertown just a minute later. She found the net on a pass from Schleusner.

Aleyna Hudson had 22 saves in the net to earn the win for the Lakers.

Avery Dentlinger stopped 28 of the 32 shots she faced for Brookings.

Brookings will face seventh-seeded Huron in the consolation semifinals at 1 p.m., today. Watertown will battle second-seeded Oahe in the semifinals at 5 p.m.
