Allyn Lockner

TOPEKA, Kan. — Allyn Olson Lockner, 92, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at Topeka, Kan.


He was born Feb.11, 1931, the oldest son of Frank M. and Agnes T. (Olson) Lockner on their farm in Hand County.


Other family members include brothers: Frank O. Lockner of Miller and Terry K. Lockner of Black Hawk.


Allyn and Barbara J. (“BJ”) McCandless were married on Aug. 15, 1969, in Brookings.
While living in South Dakota, Allyn graduated from Wessington High School in 1950, Huron College in 1954, and the University of South Dakota in 1955. He lived in Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1959. He taught at South Dakota State University from 1965 to 1973 and was South Dakota Secretary of Environmental Protection from 1973 to 1979.


While living in Kansas, Allyn was Director of Kansas Water Office from 1981 to 1982, and management systems analyst in Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Service from 1983 to 2001.


In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Allyn’s and BJ’s “Endowment: Christian Believers for the Future” at First Lutheran Church, 1234 Fairlawn Road, Topeka, Kan. 66604-2098.


Burial is at Lockner family plot in the Wessington Cemetery located west of Wessington.

Memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.
