HURON — Kay Mallon, 76, of Huron, passed away after a long fight with Parkinson’s Disease on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Avantara Huron.


Her Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at First Congregational Church.


Visitation, with her family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Welter Funeral Home. A Prayer Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.


Kay Lynn Moment, daughter of Lyle and Crystal (Draisey) Moment was born May 1, 1947, in Watertown. She grew up on the Moment homestead near Clark where she went to Thorp country school through 8th grade and then graduated from Clark High School in 1965. She received an Associate degree in cosmetology from South Dakota Hairstyling Academy in Sioux Falls in 1966.


Kay started babysitting at age 11 years old and began fixing hair in the kitchen in 7th grade. After graduation she worked at Connie’s Beauty Salon in Watertown. In 1967, she moved to Huron and began work at LaBeautique Beauty Salon for a short time and then at Mr. John’s Beauty Salon. In 1993, she became the Administrative Assistant at the First Congregational Church in Huron while still working part time at Mr. John’s. She was a member of the First Congregational Church where she served on many committees, as clerk, and president, secretary, and treasurer of the Fellowship Committee.  She was active and played a major role in the local Relay for Life Team.


Kay married Patrick Mallon on July 8, 1972, in Huron. They lived in De Smet, Iroquois and Huron. In 1978, they purchased their farm north of Huron. They farmed together all their married life. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and going to their sporting events and concerts, playing cards, reading, dancing, scrapbooking, making Christmas tree ornaments, and driving silage and grain truck during harvest.


Kay is survived by her husband, Pat; two sons, Cory (Teresa) of Tulare and Jason (Nicki) of Huron; one stepson, Rick (Jodi) Jones of New Prague, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Raistlan (Katelyn) of Watertown, Kira (Pyne) of Wolsey, Kori (Zach) Tulare, Keagan (Leanne) Hitchcock, Craig of Watertown, Nicholas of Rapid City, and Brooke of Huron; two great-grandchildren, McCoy and Landry; one sister, Julie (Larry) Tranberg of Blaine, Minn.; one brother in-law, Ben Mallon of Huron; sister-in-law, Brenda (Jeff) Dillenburg of Creston, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Crystal; parents-in-law, Gail and Marie Mallon; one sister, Sharon in infancy; one brother, Jim Moment; two brothers-in-law, Mike Mallon and Clifford Mallon in infancy; daughter-in-law, Kelly Mallon; infant great-granddaughter; niece, Amy Ann Mallon; and many aunts and uncles.
