Leon Boomsma

WESSINGTON — Leon E. Boomsma, 52, of Wessington, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.


His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey.


Visitation with his family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey with a time of sharing beginning at 6:30 p.m. 

Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.


Leon was born March 18, 1971, to George Boomsma and Phyllis (Verhelst) Boomsma in Huron. He grew up in the Broadland area on their family farm. He attended Hitchcock School. Leon loved farming and started at a young age, he also worked numerous other jobs including Dakota Pork, SD Wheat Growers, and Dakotaland Feeds.


It was at SD Wheat Growers, where he met Lori Moller. Leon and Lori were married on Jan. 24, 2003, in Huron. God blessed them with two children Jordan and Evelyn (Annie) Boomsma.


Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Lori; children, Jordan (Taylor Larson) and Annie (Lane Christensen) both of Wessington; his siblings, Georgia Sanderson, Gerrit Boomsma, Lauretta (Dave) Vilhauer, Glenn (Jennifer) Boomsma; aunts, Gerry Verhelst, Patsey (Danny) Verhelst; uncle, Eddie Verhelst; mother-in-law, Evelyn Moller;  sister-in-law, Brenda(Eldon) Broer; brothers-in-law, Lynn (Peggy) Moller, Randy (Rose) Moller, Lee Moller; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Leon was preceded in death by his parents, George and Phyllis; father-in-law, Gene Moller; uncles, Robert, William and George Verhelst; and brother-in-law, Dave Sanderson.
